In 1980 Dianne and Mike Sr. borrowed money from Dianne’s parents and with their two small children, started selling mushroom compost out of the back of an old beat up flatbed truck. Dianne and Mike both had full-time jobs, while working to grow this nursery supply business, all of their spare time was put into opening a retail store, hence the name Sparetime Supply.
In 1983 Mike finished building the original retail store and Sparetime Supply opened its doors to Willits, CA. We were a small nursery that was dedicated to giving back to the community that had given us life. Over the years it grew apparent that our superior customer service could benefit more than just the Willits community. Mikes first wholesale sale happened when he over committed on a truckload of amendments and he ended up selling part of it to another nursery north of Willits. Finally, in the late 90s we started distributing nursery supplies throughout Northern California.
The majority of the money we make stays in our community going to employee wages, and donations to various organizations. We believe in the power of relationships. We pride ourselves in always being straight forward and honest. Know that when we tell you something, we mean it. Our humble beginnings remind us to take care of our customers and vendors to the best of our ability, because without them Sparetime would never be what it is today.
